It’s a rainy icky day and my little Emma is sick. She had a runny nose yesterday but it was clear and she seemed fine otherwise so I went on and took her to town to visit a friend of mine and go to story time at Barnes & Noble with Cate. Then we went out to lunch at Panera Bread. Yummy! It was fun. I always love going to B&N but it was also kind of stressful with two kids. I just figured I needed to do it – meeting up with this friend I like but who doesn’t live particularly close to me and not going to the gym. I was sore and I’ve been obsessed. I thought it might be healthy to take a break.
This friend’s name is Laura and she’s from Maryland and has a little boy with red hair a bit younger than Cate. She’s really nice. Just super laid back and she just is who she is. I love that. Very easy to be with. We had a good time, but I would have liked it better without our kids. Would be nice to actually finish a conversation without interruptions and children running off or getting into things.
Well, last night Emma seemed to get worse. She was coughing and crying and the nose continues to run. Billy rummaged through the medicine box and told me I should take her to the doctor, but I didn’t give her any drugs and I am not taking her to the doctor just yet. I think it’s just a cold. The doctor will just tell me it’s viral because she doesn’t have a fever and I will have wasted time and copay for him to tell me something I already know.
This morning I’ve got the runny nose and the sneezing. Lovely. I think so far Cate is fine. I guess we’re skipping preschool and the gym this morning in favor of lounging around on a rainy fall day. Emma’s still asleep.
Yesterday I put out my fall decorations and redid my sunflower wreath by ripping off the fade blooms and hot gluing fall decorations I got on sale at Joann’s Fabrics. I like it. Then I hung a witch to the door. Oh, I’ll just show you! Pictures are better, right?
I really want to get a pumpkin and some mums for my front stoop but I refuse to pay $7.99 for ONE freakin’ pumpkin. I’ve got to find them somewhere cheaper. They were even that much at Sam’s Club when we were there last weekend.
I should have spray painted that scary spider black the other day but instead I murdered it. Yeah, go right ahead and call PETA on me but I don’t like spiders and I thought that one was dangerous. However, I later discovered it was just a harmless wolf spider. Oh, well, she’s gone nonetheless.

I hope Emma is feeling better soon and you escape the crud! Seems like every year, when school is in session again, our house experiences a similar cycle of irritating sickness.
I HATE…get that??…H.A.T.E. spiders!!! Kill em all!!!!!!!
Sorry about the cold. Mom’s always get whatever their urchins have don’t they. It’s tough when little ones are sick.
You’re decorating is fun! Love the witch on the door.
have a good weekend babe!
I’d of killed the bitch too…….Hope Emma’s cold passes quickly, J had one a few weeks ago it left and is now returning once again, assuming since starting school this will happen alot, LOVELY. She said yea, there’s alot of germs at school mama, EVERYONE wants to play with me, oh ok little miss social butterfly ! We did our halloween decorations also, and feel the same about the price of a fkin pumpkin, gimme a break, I’m gonna find a field and steal some screw it !
We got colds here too, but with high fevers. The joys of preschool! Ohh next year you should plant pumpkins! We did and only got 4 but hey we don’t have to buy them! Hope Emma feels better soon!
Sorry to hear that you guys are somewhat under the weather. That sucks! I am hoping you all get better real soon!
As far as decorating goes…very nice ensemble you have there. You just motivated me to get my act together and start pulling the Halloween stuff out…Maybe a project for my wife and I this weekend?
that damn spider was a killer spider!
It was self defense!!!!
Hope you get unsnotty and your weekend is good!!
Sick? On the weekend? NO FAIR! Already got your fall stuff out! Wow! Good job. It’s going to be in the mid 80s here again….fall hasn’t officially started around here.
I’ll put my wreath out October 1st. To make it official, and all.
[I didn't make mine. Coulda' but I got a super cool one at clearance price via Southern Living @ Home]
You too, have a Joann’s Fabric store? Joann’s is awesome! Great stuff, great sales, great coupons!.
Happy Friday and Germies BE GONE!
I bought a pumpkin that you plug in, you know the plastic ones you can get at walmart, the girls love it. That is the extent of my decorations for fall. I am with you on the price of pumpkins, I am going to go with Kylee’s suggestion about planting them. I have a really cute set of pilgrim turkeys that stick into a gourd, so the pumpkin is the body, and I think I might get them out if I can find some cheap pumpkins…I will take pics if I do! I am sorry you have a sick one, I am sure that my turn is coming soon. I just hate when they get a snotty and I go through box after box of Kleenex. Also, I am into drinking wine now! I can’t do the schwag beer much anymore, it gives me horrible heartburn :p
Hope Emma feels better soon. Come over with your hot glue gun anytime. I know nothing of this decorating business.
Awww. I’m sorry to hear that y’all are a little sickies. I hope you feel better and I’m glad you took a break from the gym. Get some rest and have some soup since it’s raining.
I LOVE your decorations. You know how much of a sucker I am for fall. hehehehe. Keep in touch.
Sorry you and Emma are sick. I love the fall decorations… the wreath is beautiful. You should make another one and sell it for an $8 profit so you can go get a pumpkin for your porch! I’m always thinking…
I love your autumn/halloween decorations!!!!!
Hope Miss Cate feels better soon!
I’m feeling your pain, girlfriend… Bella and I are suffering, but perfect hubby is *fine*.
Love the decorations! You are such a crafty girl!!!
Wolf spiders scare the shit out of me. Most spiders do anyhow… I used to suck them up in the vac and then suck up pennies after them to make sure they got good and knocked out. F&ck Peta, even if I’m a vegetarian! LOL
Hope you feel better soon…
Bummer on the lil ill one. Hope she gets to feeling better soon. I love your wreath. Cute, cute! I haven’t even thought about the decorations yet. Maybe next weekend.
Also .. Spider? So would have its bum smooooshhhhed in the house too. Ugh! Yuk!
I’m doing some research on children’s cold and cough medicine and happened upon your blog via Google.
I would try buckwheat honey for a child’s cough. Make sure you do not use any over the counter cough and cold medicines especially if your child is less than 6.
As a dad and a doctor, I find children’s cough and cold medications a very scary topic. I used to think that as long as my patient’s or I dosed the children’s cold & cough medications right, then everything would be OK. But when I researched this further, it turns out that children have died from “over dose” of ALL THE MAJOR CHILDRENS COLD AND COUGH MEDICINES even when given the correct dose (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/reprint/108/3/e52?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=cough+medications&andorexactfulltext=and&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&sortspec=relevance&resourcetype=HWCIT).
Here are a few interesting facts:
1. Last October 2007, the drug companies promised the FDA that they would change all their labeling to say “do not use” for children under the age of 2, but I was just in the store last week, and a number of packages still had the old labeling!
2. The FDA reviewed safety and effectiveness data this last fall and its expert panel said that “right now the current cold & cough medications should not be given to children under 6.” Here is a link to the FDA’s minutes, “http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/ac/07/minutes/2007-4323m1-Final.pdf”, see page 6. The FDA made a public advisory in January 2008 about never using it for children under 2, because the Drug companies are fighting them on the panels ruling to never use cold and cough medications on children 2 to 6. Since these drugs were previously allowed by the FDA, the FDA is forced to go though “due process” before they are willing to make an official public statement about never giving these medications to children 2 to 6.
3. The number of infant deaths attributed to cold and cough medicines is dramatically underreported. New research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics demonstrated that there were at least “10 unexpected infant deaths that were associated with cold-medication” in 2006 alone in the state of Arizona. Extrapolated over the US and Canadian population, that would be over 500 deaths a year associated with cold-medication! (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/122/2/e318)
The thing that the drug companies don’t want anyone to know is that these medications never underwent the rigorous safety and effectiveness studies modern medications have to go though, they we grandfathered in the early 1970’s because at that time experts felt like they seemed to work, and they seemed safe enough.
Interestingly, some researchers from Penn State have shown that Buckwheat honey is better then the OTC drugs for children’s cough. There is a web site that talks about this, and gives lots of research to help parents be better informed about how to help their kids. Check out http://www.honeydontcough.com/
